We had over 250 fisheries professionals and students attend this meeting and they were able to choose among ten different sessions and over 100 presentations.

Our silent and call out auctions raised over $4,500 for the student travel fund. Thank you to all who bid and a special thanks to Hobo Jim, Andy Seitz and the Student Posse for running the auction.

The Wally Noerenberg Award for Fishery Excellence is the highest award bestowed by the Alaska Chapter.It honors an individual’s life-long achievements in a career focused on Alaska’s fisheries. The committee selected two recipients for the 2011 award: William (Bill) Heard and Dr. John (Jack) Helle. 

The Awards Committee selected Ray Hander for the Alaska Chapter Service Award. Ray was honored for his active involvement and leadership in the Chapter, including his service as Chair to both the Molly Ahlgren Scholarship Award and the Financial Assets Oversight Committees and his past service as Treasurer.  

For the first time in Chapter history, the Meritorious Service Award was shared amongst a group of four individuals: Charles Krueger, Christian Zimmerman, Karen Gillis and Joseph Spaeder. Through their efforts, American Fisheries Society Symposium 70 was published in 2009, entitled Pacific Salmon: Ecology and Management of Western Alaska’s Populations. This publication compiles in one place the freshwater, estuarine, and marine ecology of salmon in the North Pacific; human dimensions of AYK salmon; freshwater and marine management; subsistence, commercial and sport fisheries; lessons learned from other fisheries in terms of ecology, governance and management; and finally builds upon these four areas to address new challenges and new approaches to salmon management.

• Rachel DeWilde is a sophomore at the University of Alaska Fairbanks working towards a B.S. in Biology.  Her research interests have been primarily with population genetics of Alaska Blackfish. 
• Leslie Jensen is a recent graduate from the University of Washington, and is an intern at the Aquatic Restoration and Research Institute in Talkeetna.  
• Theresa Floyd is a Master’s student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.  Her research  focuses on the physiological effects of Ichthyophonus on Chinook salmon and the consequences of parental infection on hatching success and offspring survival in the Salcha River. 

Molly Ahlgren Scholarship Winner:

• Daniel Prince, is a junior at the University of Alaska Anchorage and is working towards a B.S. degree in Biology.

Best Student Papers:

• Parker Bradley, “Characterizing the Juvenile Fish Community in Large Glacial Rivers in Alaska”
• Jason Neuswanger, “The Importance of Drifting Debris for Drift-Feeding Juvenile Chinook Salmon”

Best Student Poster:

• Robert Marcotte, “Determining Population Relationships for Two sister Species of Coregonus: Arctic and Bering Cisco (C. autumnalis and C. laurettae)”

New members of the Executive Committee are Phil Lorring as Vice President, Nicky Szarzi as Secretary and Thomas Farrugia as the Student Representative.

New items to notice: our Latest News (right hand side of page) will feature Alaska Chapter news and upcoming deadlines. This will essentially replace the Chapter News Items from the old site. The Headlines (center of the home page) will highlight our biggest events (Chapter Meetings, Award Recipients, etc..). We’ve also added photos of all the Committee Chairs and Chapter Officers so you can put faces with our names. Perhaps the biggest change you will note is our Online Registration/Payment option for Annual Meetings. We hope that this will save our Treasurer quite a bit of time and will streamline the registration process.
